Basketball - New York Knicks 2006-07 Preview
One of the biggest disasters in all of sports in recent history, the Knicks have to prove that their enormous payroll can win games or face a not-so-good future. With most of their money locked up with selfish swing men new head coach Isiah Thomas will have his hands full trying to fulfill New York fan expectations.
The most talented player on the Knicks is point guard Stephon Marbury. The problem with Marbury is that he is often too selfish for a point guard and usually finishes on losing teams because of his attitude. It is hard to imagine the Knicks succeeding if Isiah can’t get Marbury to start playing team basketball. Behind Marbury is young, and short, Nate Robinson. Nate is a good option off the bench and can score points, but his size makes him a serious defensive liability.
At the two position are Jamal Crawford and Steve Francis. Both players are selfish shoot-first players with a lot of talent. Both players also have to find a way to be more effective in scoring. Expect the two to share time unless one of them emerges as a reliable option game in and game out.
The forward positions are filled by Jared Jeffries, Quentin Richardson, David Lee and Channing Frye. Of the four, Frye is the one with the brightest future as a Knick. Channing had a great rookie season, averaging 12.3 points and 5.8 rebounds a game and should expand upon those numbers with a year under his belt. Jeffries was acquired from the Wizards and the Knicks are hoping that he will bring toughness and defense to a team without either.
Finally at the center position is Eddy Curry, who once was referred to as a possible second coming of Shaq. Curry is not one of the brightest players in the league, but should be able to score in the paint enough to help the Knicks stay balanced. Right now, it is a pretty safe bet that the Knicks are regretting trading their picks for him.
The Knicks of 2006 are not much different than 2005, but a new coach, who is coaching for his job, and maybe desperation might help them score more wins. It is hard to imagine the Knicks succeeding if Isiah can’t get Marbury to start playing team basketball. Behind Marbury is young, and short, Nate Robinson. Nate is a good option off the bench and can score points, but his size makes him a serious defensive liability.
At the two position are Jamal Crawford and Steve Francis. Both players are selfish shoot-first players with a lot of talent. Both players also have to find a way to be more effective in scoring. Expect the two to share time unless one of them emerges as a reliable option game in and game out.
The forward positions are filled by Jared Jeffries, Quentin Richardson, David Lee and Channing Frye. Of the four, Frye is the one with the brightest future as a Knick. Channing had a great rookie season, averaging 12.3 points and 5.8 rebounds a game and should expand upon those numbers with a year under his belt. Jeffries was acquired from the Wizards and the Knicks are hoping that he will bring toughness and defense to a team without either.
Finally at the center position is Eddy Curry, who once was referred to as a possible second coming of Shaq. Curry is not one of the brightest players in the league, but should be able to score in the paint enough to help the Knicks stay balanced. Right now, it is a pretty safe bet that the Knicks are regretting trading their picks for him.
The Knicks of 2006 are not much different than 2005, but a new coach, who is coaching for his job, and maybe desperation might help them score more wins. It is hard to see the playoffs for a team with as much selfishness as this one, but they certainly have the talent to do so if they find a way to play together.

It seems like just yesterday when the Magic were fresh off of signing Grant Hill and Tracy McGrady and had their future set for years to come. Now, the team no longer depends on either of the players and are fresh off of another rebuilding year.
The superstar on the Magic, and the future, is Dwight Howard. Howard is a monster in the post and looks to be the next best big man in the league. Howard has averaged a double-double in his first two seasons in the league, and took the next step last season by showing that he could be a reliable scoring option as well as a good rebounder. The expectations for him coming into this season are nothing short than at least 20 points and 12 rebounds a game, and he should have no problem reaching these numbers.
Next to Howard will be former Piston Darko Milicic. Darko has yet to play a season with consistent minutes, but should get his chance in 2006. His play in Europe has excited management and fans alike, but Darko will have to prove that he can perform in the NBA for the Magic to establish themselves as a playoff contender.

Martial Arts - What A Black Belt Means To Me - The Journey
It’s often said in Martial Arts that the meaning doesn’t lie in how good you are or what belt you have, rather the meaning lies in the journey. Before I get into “What Black Belt Means To Me”, I would like to talk about my journey of these past few months.
The Journey
Last week I had flown to Nashville to test for my long awaited San Dan (3rd degree Black Belt - This is kind of like becoming an official “Teacher”). Prior to the test I had been training consistently since April of this year at a friends dojo and my local gym.
It had been about 5 years since I’ve last practiced my discipline, Wado-Ryu Karate-Do, so my recollection of the system was very vague. After watching numerous tapes of myself as a young martial artist, I had re-learned my under belt curriculum, however I was struggling to remember my black belt curriculum. If you know anything about martial arts, one’s under belt knowledge is essential because it is considered as the foundation of one’s training. On the other hand, a lot of people believe that your training truly begins when you achieve your first black belt. I couldn’t agree more. When I was promoted to Sho Dan (1st Degree Black Belt) my interpretation about Wado-Ryu and the martial arts had grown dramatically and I began to really learn.
Either way, I needed to know everything that could have possibly been thrown at me because it had been 10 years since my last official test.
In July, I went to Nashville to train with my highly recognized and beloved instructor Sensei Wayne Tyler. I consider him as a father figure in my martial arts career because of his vast knowledge of Wado-Ryu and unconditional love for his students and the art. Imagine being a scientist and your teacher was Albert Einstein – that is what it feels like to be under the wing of Sensei Tyler (or Mr. Tyler, as I call him). I was in Nashville training with Sensei 2 – 3 hours per day for 5 days. I caught up on my curriculum and took the extra knowledge that was passed down by him and applied it to my training back in Denver.
Again, since I didn’t know what to expect, I conditioned myself to be ready for almost anything. Not only was I practicing my basics and katas (Japanese forms), but I was also running 2 miles, three days per week, 15 – 20 minutes on the rowing machine and about 6 – 7 miles on the stationary bike. I don’t think I could have been more prepared for this test.
I successfully passed my test and was promoted to San Dan on October 17th 2006. I must say, this was one of my greatest accomplishments in my martial arts career and a dream come true. It has taken me several years to reach this goal, but it has reinforced my interpretation of being a black belt, or in my case – San Dan.

Cigars - Fine Cigars From Bahamas, Brazil, Dominican Republic And Greece
Cigars come from all over the world. Why, then, do cigar aficionados so often limit themselves to a handful (literally) of well-regarded smokes from a few highly-regarded companies or regions? Perhaps like a passionate music fan visiting the "International" section of a CD store for the first time - they're confused, stymied by the very breadth of their options. How do you know what's good? What cigars are the mainstays of each region?
If you're in this situation, you're in luck. Herein, we look at some of the best-known cigars from countries all over the world.

Named for the classic Brazillian novel by Jorge Amado, Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands' the bawdy tale of a woman in love with both her respectable second husband and with the randy ghost of her dead first husband - the Dona Flor is, say fans, an appropriately memorable smoke. And it should be.
As writer Victoria Shorr points out, it's the creation of Felix Menendez, son of Alonso Menendez, the famous one-time Cuban Montecristo cigar maker who, after the revolution of 1959, headed to the Canary Islands and invented the equally well-loved Montecruz. This is a family that knows cigars (Felix's brother Benjamin is also a captain of the industry). And with the Dona Flor line, Felix's first attempt to reconquer America, they seem to have struck gold - or at least consistent ratings in the high eighties from Cigar Aficionado.

I found the sixth and seventh to be the showstoppers of the opening nine. The former is a par three of 175 yards that plays from an elevated tee over a sharp elbow of tidal wetland to a green that looks no bigger than the hood of Tiger Woods’s courtesy Buick. All tee shots here are hold-your-breath moments.
But to my mind, the enduring mark of a great designer is whether he can create a short par four with enough imagination and options to make you stand on the tee and scratch your head a bit before you play the hole. That’s brilliantly the case at May River’s par-four seventh, which for most players is a mere alligator’s snout over three hundred yards and requires you to throttle back to a low iron or rescue club off the tee, then sculpt a careful sand wedge to a sliver of green fronted by a pair of deep, punishing bunkers.
Given such abundant beauty, most designers would prefer to save their most dramatic landforms for a finale—and in this instance Jack Nicklaus is no exception. The back nine opens with an imposing par five that requires two stout shots to a pair of island fairways, precedes to a little bandbox of a par three in the lee of a sunlit lagoon, then sends you into six of the toughest—yet most beguiling—holes you’ll ever play.
As the tidal shores of the May River and some of the most fertile oyster beds in the world swing back into view, it’s tempting to become distracted by the scenery and lose track of your game. Gloriously backlit in the waning daylight, we found the difficult par-five fifteenth to be just about everything God and a Golden Bear could throw at a nature-loving golfer: wetlands, steep falloffs into nicely unkempt sandy waste areas, hissing grasslands where who knows what was lurking, fairway bunkers meant to be avoided at all cost, and finally, a false-fronted Redan-style green that made getting close to the flag all but impossible. I was greatly relieved to garner my gentlemanly bogey and hurry on with the encroaching darkness.
Suddenly I could fathom why Jack’s concluding hole lay so serenely and simply on the landscape. As you emerge back into sight of the handsome green-shingled clubhouse, recalling hunting lodges from the South’s time as a private playground for elite sportsmen, you play down a slight rise to a generous finishing green, negotiating the gentlest par five on the course. It’s almost as if Jack is congratulating you for braving a walk on the wilder side of his imagination.
That evening we dined at the River House on Chef Christopher Blobaum’s robust she-crab bisque and a seasoned Lowcountry grouper with bacon risotto. It almost felt like an illicit pleasure to drink a creamy white viognier and replay our day’s adventures to an older couple at an adjoining table, who had just arrived for a few days away from the seesawing stock markets and presidential debates.
After we’d filled them in on everything—from the most wildlife-friendly golf course we’d ever played, to the thrill of watching hundreds of snowy egrets and cormorants glide in on evening breezes and fill the wild fig trees by the lagoon near our cottage—the man told us an amusing story.
“I know a guy who was so eager to play May River he booked a night at the Inn just so he could have access to the course,” he said slyly. “He glanced in his cottage, collected his free bottle of wine, played the course and then went home. All told it cost him $700 for his round.” The man gave a broad smile.
“He was so impressed,” injected the woman, winking, “he came back with his wife and actually stayed at the Inn.”
“Smart man,” spoke up my golf bride, looking out to where the evening bonfires were being lit, fixing her gaze as if this magical place might vanish like Brigadoon in a Lowcountry instant.
Taking it to the house at Winged Foot
I’ve been a member At Winged Foot since 1961, when I was sponsored by my friend and employer at the time Wellington Mara, who owned the New York Giants. I still can’t get over the beauty of the place. My favorite hole is the tenth on the West Course, a 190-yard par three called Pulpit. It’s a gorgeous hole, and tough as hell, even for the pros. There are deep bunkers on either side of the oblong green and a bunker in front, and if you hit it long you’re likely to be out of bounds. Every time I play it, I stop to soak in the peacefulness of the scene: the huge trees behind and left of the green, the big elm looming over the back tee.
I must admit, though, that I also have a particular fondness for the par-three third on the East—the only hole I’ve ever aced. I was playing with Don Meredith in the early seventies, when we’d just started doing Monday Night Football. It was early morning, and we were staring into the sun. I didn’t see the shot. “Where’d it go?” I asked him. “I think you went over, Shake,” he said. When we reached the green, I walked straight to the back to look for my ball. Suddenly I heard Don say, “Son of a bitch!” and then he pulled my ball out of the cup. So I’d missed seeing my only hole in one. Only one so far, anyway. You never know. I might have another one in me yet. That’s why I love golf: It’s the only game where you initiate everything. In football, you’re reacting to everything. In golf, you can’t blame anyone but yourself.

Mickelson expects to make weekend run at title
ATLANTA – If Phil Mickelson has designs on winning his first career PGA Tour Player of the Year Award, he likely needs to win this week’s Tour Championship.
Following an opening 1-over 71, a second-round 67 on Friday moved him a bit closer to that possibility.
“Since the British Open, this is the best I've felt with my golf swing, the best I've felt with a putter,” said Mickelson, who posted a bogey-free 32 on the back-nine. “I'm not sure if I put myself too far back after the 27 holes I played poorly, but I should play well this weekend.”

After the round, he credited some range work with instructor Butch Harmon as the reason for his turnaround.
“Ball-striking‑wise, I have not struck it well,” he said. “My alignment was a little bit off, setup was a little bit off, and swing was just not flowing. … We worked the last few days; I was able to stop worrying about mechanics and start feeling the shots, feeling the swing, hitting shots again. That's why I'm looking forward to the next 36. I know I'm far back, but I think I'm going to make a pretty good run.”
Mickelson maintained he could see parallels between his start this week and that of 2009, when he opened 73-67, but shot 66-65 on the weekend to claim the hardware.
“It was important to shoot something under par to get back in it, because I was too far back. But there's a low round out there. You know, there's a 5-, 6-, 7-under-par round out there. I've got two good chances to go get it.”

With a sweep of the afternoon fourball matches Friday on foreign soil, the U.S. took an early lead at the PGA Cup and holds a 6-2 advantage over Great Britain & Ireland after Day 1.
After splitting the morning foursomes matches 2-2 at Slaley Hall in Hexham, England, the Americans won all four afternoon matches, a run that was capped by a 2-up victory by Bob Sowards and Mike Small, who also serves as the men's golf coach at the University of Illinois. Sowards and Small both contributed two points to the American effort Friday, winning in both the morning and afternoon, as did club pros J.C. Anderson and Kelly Mitchum.
Play will continue Saturday with the same schedule in place, four morning foursomes matches followed by four fourball matches in the afternoon, with the overall competition decided by 10 singles matches on Sunday.
Originated in 1973, the PGA Cup is a biennial, Ryder Cup-style event pitting PGA club professionals from the U.S. and Great Britain & Ireland against each other. The Americans have won the competition each of the last three times, including a 17 1/2 to 8 1/2 win in 2011 at CordeValle Golf Club.

What it means: Though two rounds remain at East Lake, Stenson appears poised to take home both the Tour Championship and FedEx Cup titles. He once again got off to a hot start Friday, with three birdies across his first four holes, and his 10-under 130 total ties his career low for 36 holes.
Round of the day: A week after notching a runner-up finish at the BMW Championship,Nick Watney played his way back into the top 10 thanks to a 5-under 65 Friday in Atlanta. The veteran carded seven total birdies on his round, including three over his final four holes, and as a result was able to rebound from an opening 72 and move somewhat into contention, albeit seven shots behind Stenson’s lead.
Best of the rest: Former PGA champion Keegan Bradley matched Watney’s 65 for low round honors Friday, with six birdies against just a single dropped shot at the fifth hole. Bradley recorded four birdies across a seven-hole stretch from Nos. 9-15, and like Watney will now begin the weekend seven shots off the pace as he looks to continue his climb up the overall FedEx Cup standings.
Biggest disappointment: Through 13 holes, it appeared Tiger Woods was headed for “round of the day” honors, as the world No. 1 was 5 under on his round with just five holes remaining. He played that closing stretch in 6 over, though, a disappointing finish that included a triple-bogey 7 at No. 17 and left Woods with a 1-over 71 in the second round. At 4-over 144, he now finds himself tied for 26th among the 30-man field with just two rounds to play.
Main storyline heading into Saturday: With tee times moved up due to approaching inclement weather, the biggest question is whether or not Stenson will allow any of the elite players in this week’s field within striking distance. The Swede has largely put on a clinic through 36 holes, and now halfway to a season-long title shows no signs of slowing. If anyone can catch him, though, it may be Scott, who sits in second place and eyes Player of the Year honors that may come his way should he win Sunday.

If the object (club head) is brought closer to the axis (formed by the golfer's stable spine), it speeds up. As the club head moves further out from the axis of rotation causes it to slow down. In a golf swing, as the player rotates the club, the hands move farther from the body or axis and slow down. 1 Magic Golf Move - The Early Backward Wrist Break
I'll never forget the time a few years ago when my brother in law Steve explained to me how he discovered a major break through in his golf swing. He describes this golf swing takeaway tip as "lightning in a bottle"...the true holy grail of golf!

The majority of amatuer golfers turn their wrists in a way that opens or closes the clubface when they first start their backswing...This fatal move immediately puts your golf swing off the proper plane. Golfers then usually spend the rest of the golf swing trying to adjust so they can just make contact with the ball...not a good recipe for success!
